Third grade students have begun learning about air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. They have learned that humans have a large impact on the earth even if the impact is a bad one. From land waste becoming water pollution to air pollution causing heart and lung damage, students are learning that pollution is worse than they thought it was and that they as one person, can try to fix the problem, little by little. We have not yet completed this unit but we will soon be talking about conservation and the 3 R’s as well as continuing our conversations about these three types of pollution.
The photos are of exploration 3rd grade students did today! Eleven students were given one card to read from, each card had a part of the journey taken by Freddie. On his journey though, he ran into multiple different types of water pollution. As each card was read an item with a likeness to the pollutant was poured into the river with our fish. As more pollutants entered the river, the impacts that humans have on environment and the earth became more substantial. From clean, clear water to water filled with dirt, paper, fertilizer, oil, acid rain, animal waste, salt, and sludge from a factory completely the changed the habitat that Freddie was living in. Ultimately, by the end of this exploration, the breathing that had become difficult for Freddie the fish, eventually led to his las gasp for breath. After completing this exploration students then began working on an opinion writing about why they think it is important to take care of the earth.

Our Kindergarten and first-grade students had a wonderful time celebrating Black History Month with a special guest reader - Ms. Sharmaine Anderson! She is the chair of the Education Committee for the Camden NAACP and is always a joy to have in our school!
Through joyful stories and meaningful conversations, students explored the importance of kindness, courage, and the many voices that have shaped our history. Moments like these inspire curiosity, spark imagination, and remind us how powerful reading can be.
Thank you to our guest reader for sharing your time, your story, and your love of learning with our students. We are grateful for you.

MLG’s Running Club is hosting a schoolwide Shoe Drive Fundraiser now through February 9, 2026! Students have been hard at work alongside Mrs. Walker, sorting donations and bagging pairs of shoes. Each pair collected helps raise funds for our running club, and all donated shoes will be repurposed to support individuals and families in need.
We are still accepting donations, so it’s the perfect time to clean out those closets! We welcome any size or style of clean, gently used, or new shoes. Donations may be dropped off in the front lobby of Mamie Lou Gross Elementary School.
Thank you for helping our running club one pair at a time!
