Scientists in Mrs. Stack’s 3rd-grade class explored the three types of soil (sand, clay, and loam) and recorded their observations of texture and color. They also formed hypotheses of which type of soil would retain the most water and which type of soil would retain the least water.

Following the hypotheses, an experiment was conducted where the same amount of water was poured into each type of soil. Students measured the amount of water that drained out, then subtracted that from the total amount of water poured in, which resulted in the amount of water that each type of soil retained. WHY these soils did or did not retain the amount of water they did…the answers…well, those are in the particles!

Our second-grade students had the opportunity to explore the five regions of Georgia without leaving the classroom! They went on a virtual field trip where they learned about the Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain regions. Animals and plants found in each region were discussed, and students were eager to share what they had learned.

Our first graders are working hard to apply their newly learned phonics skills! First, they have to practice how to keep their place when reading. What can make this tracking more fun? Alien fingers, of course! Let's just say our tracking skills are "out of this world!"

This week in STEM class, students had a blast bringing science to life by creating their own volcanoes using baking soda and vinegar. They explored how real volcanoes work while learning about chemical reactions between different ingredients. It was a fun, hands-on way to mix creativity with science and discover the excitement of experiments in action!

Our 3rd-grade students worked on our standards under 3.NR.1, focusing on place value. We ended our unit by making Place Value Robots. Students counted the number of Base Ten Blocks used to make their robot. They then compared their robot's value to their classmates'. Students enjoyed using math creativity today in class.

Information will be sent home with your student soon about two exciting reading programs that will be used at Mamie Lou Gross! As in years past, students will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program by taking quizzes after they have read a book. New to MLG this year is Beanstack! This virtual reading log allows you to track the minutes your child is reading at home as they work their way towards completing a variety of challenges. Please see the attached handouts, which will also be coming home with your child, for more information.

Fifth-grade students worked with Mrs. Brazell on a "Creeping Crust" activity to learn Earth Science standard S5E1. They were studying how volcanoes and earthquakes can be constructive or destructive, depending on the different movements of the plates. This activity allowed the students to use their skills of observation to determine which plate boundary was more likely to create a volcano. By putting their background knowledge to work, they were able to find success in this fun, hands-on activity.
