Our fifth graders had a swashbuckling good time celebrating National Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19!
In Mrs. Mathis’s math class, students teamed up to solve pirate-themed multi-step word problems.
In Mrs. Brazell’s science class, they designed treasure maps that showed off the landforms they’ve been studying.
In ELA, Mrs. Walker and Mr. Harvey assisted students as they worked through pirate-inspired stations to review figurative language, plot elements, and sentence structure.
No one had to walk the plank, and it turned out to be a day they’ll truly treasure!

Scientists in Mrs. Stack’s 3rd-grade class explored the three types of soil (sand, clay, and loam) and recorded their observations of texture and color. They also formed hypotheses of which type of soil would retain the most water and which type of soil would retain the least water.

Following the hypotheses, an experiment was conducted where the same amount of water was poured into each type of soil. Students measured the amount of water that drained out, then subtracted that from the total amount of water poured in, which resulted in the amount of water that each type of soil retained. WHY these soils did or did not retain the amount of water they did…the answers…well, those are in the particles!
