Friday, September 19, is National Talk Like a Pirate Day! Please join us by dressing up as pirates at school for a fun day of learning and special activities!

Don't forget to turn in your Krispy Kreme Doughnut money and order forms by tomorrow, 9/16.

Learning to read and spell can be fun! In Mrs. Keel's second-grade class, students showed off their blending skills. Way to go, kids!

Scientists in Mrs. Stack’s 3rd-grade class explored the three types of soil (sand, clay, and loam) and recorded their observations of texture and color. They also formed hypotheses of which type of soil would retain the most water and which type of soil would retain the least water.
Following the hypotheses, an experiment was conducted where the same amount of water was poured into each type of soil. Students measured the amount of water that drained out, then subtracted that from the total amount of water poured in, which resulted in the amount of water that each type of soil retained. WHY these soils did or did not retain the amount of water they did…the answers…well, those are in the particles!

Our second-grade students had the opportunity to explore the five regions of Georgia without leaving the classroom! They went on a virtual field trip where they learned about the Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain regions. Animals and plants found in each region were discussed, and students were eager to share what they had learned.

Don't forget all order forms and money for the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Fundraiser are due on Tuesday, September 16th.

Yearbook order forms will be distributed to all students this week. You can order online or by completing the order form. Orders placed through 11/30 will be $30 per yearbook. Beginning 12/1, prices will increase to $40 per book. Our first graders are working hard to apply their newly learned phonics skills! First, they have to practice how to keep their place when reading. What can make this tracking more fun? Alien fingers, of course! Let's just say our tracking skills are "out of this world!"

This week in STEM class, students had a blast bringing science to life by creating their own volcanoes using baking soda and vinegar. They explored how real volcanoes work while learning about chemical reactions between different ingredients. It was a fun, hands-on way to mix creativity with science and discover the excitement of experiments in action!

It's time for our Krispy Kreme Doughnut Fundraiser! Forms will be coming home this week. All orders and money will be due by 9/16. Donuts will be ready for pick-up on 9/25 and a message will be sent out when they are ready for pick-up.

Check out what is happening at MLG for the month of September.

Our 3rd-grade students worked on our standards under 3.NR.1, focusing on place value. We ended our unit by making Place Value Robots. Students counted the number of Base Ten Blocks used to make their robot. They then compared their robot's value to their classmates'. Students enjoyed using math creativity today in class.

Our book fair is in one month, and volunteers are needed to help the students shop! Make sure to join PAWS to hear about all of the awesome volunteer opportunities available at Mamie Lou Gross.
Scholastic Book Fair dates are September 29 - October 3.

Information will be sent home with your student soon about two exciting reading programs that will be used at Mamie Lou Gross! As in years past, students will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program by taking quizzes after they have read a book. New to MLG this year is Beanstack! This virtual reading log allows you to track the minutes your child is reading at home as they work their way towards completing a variety of challenges. Please see the attached handouts, which will also be coming home with your child, for more information.

If you are interested in joining PAWS, please see the information below.

Fifth-grade students worked with Mrs. Brazell on a "Creeping Crust" activity to learn Earth Science standard S5E1. They were studying how volcanoes and earthquakes can be constructive or destructive, depending on the different movements of the plates. This activity allowed the students to use their skills of observation to determine which plate boundary was more likely to create a volcano. By putting their background knowledge to work, they were able to find success in this fun, hands-on activity.

Mrs. Walker's fifth graders had an intense and engaging review of sentence structure. They played a Jenga game with a twist: after completing a worksheet on complete sentences, students spun a color wheel to see which piece they had to pull from the tower. The suspense built with each turn until the tower came crashing down! This was a fun and interactive way to make a traditional review feel like a game.

"Mrs. Lloyd's Kindergarten class is exploring the world of Investigating Math and Science. In their math lesson titled "Investigative Research Task: Sink or Float", students are investigating the world around them to discover objects that sink or float. Students observed various objects and used their task sheet to log their data. All students had a great time!
