Please have students wear closed toe shoes and any sunscreen or bug spray must be applied at home . Students may also wear hats and sunglasses. We are asking that each homeroom class has a case of water for their classroom, so if parents are able to donate a case of water for their student's homeroom teacher that would be appreciated. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle that travels with them throughout the day.

Please remember that siblings will not be able to attend Field Day. Please contact the Front Office with any questions.

Family Night March 19
Mrs. Walker’s 5th grade students recently had a special opportunity to learn about history from Mamie Lou Gross Elementary’s very own head custodian, Marlon Lawrence. In honor of Women’s History Month, Mr. Marlon (as students affectionately call him) shared a book and stories about his great-aunt, Fannie Lou Hamer.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a fearless voting rights activist, community organizer, and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Rising from poverty as a Mississippi sharecropper, she became a powerful voice for equality and justice. Her courageous 1964 televised testimony about the violence she endured while trying to register to vote helped bring national attention to the struggle for voting rights and played an important role in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Students were fascinated to learn that Mr. Marlon has the honor of calling this historic figure his great-aunt. It was a meaningful moment for students to see how someone they interact with every day has a personal connection to a person who made such a powerful impact on American history.
What a memorable and inspiring learning experience for Mrs. Walker’s class!
